Campus Community Garden

Students working in the gardentomatoes

The Campus Community Garden here at Southern Connecticut State University has been growing every year since it's beginning almost four years ago. Located down the steps beside Davis Hall the garden consists of a large fenced in garden space, an enclosed vented greenhouse, a storage shed, as well as raised beds and flowers surrounding the garden.

Any department, club, or individual can speak to the Office of Sustainability to claim a spot in the garden to grow their own vegetables, fruit, herbs, or flowers! As always, help is welcomed to maintain, water, and harvest in the garden.

Many different groups and individuals have volunteered their time in the garden, including:
Geography Club, Anthropology Club, SEOP, Chartwells, Library Services, Environmental Studies, FYE, Americorps Vista, The Hamden Transition Academy, and many more! Why don't you stop by, too? Organize a group get-together or come on your own- everyone is invited!

did you know?

The campus garden is organic! No pesticides or synthetic fertilizers are used. When something such as a pest or mildew appears we work with 100% natural solutions to solve the problem. This is done through incorporating barrier or repellant plants, beneficial insects, or do-it-yourself natural fungicides.

donations to the community

Most of the garden's fruits, vegetables and herbs get donated to local soup kitchens such as the Community Dining Room in Branford and St. Ann's Soup Kitchen in Hamden. During the first week of August 2014 alone, over 40 pounds of food (such as squash, cucumbers, tomatoes, and basil) were donated! Below are just a couple of the many thanks we have received for our contributions:

"Thank you so much for your very kind, much needed, donations to the Community Dining Room! Thanks to your generosity we continue to be able to provide nutritional food support and referral services to our community."

"The volunteers and staff who labor in the Food Pantry and Soup Kitchen were greatly touched by the outpouring of support people like you provided to assist them in completing the mission of feeding those in need... I would like to personally thank you for your help in assisting the St. Ann Soup Kitchen, your generous support is truly appreciated. The Soup Kitchen is strong and doing good work for those in need in our community thanks to your assistance."
