The Voluntary System of Accountability (VSA) is designed to improve public understanding of how public colleges and universities operate.

The College Portrait provides consistent, comparable and transparent information on the characteristics of institutions and students, cost of attendance, student engagement with the learning process, and core educational outcomes. The information is intended for students, families, policy-makers, campus faculty and staff, the general public, and other higher education stakeholders.

As part of Southern's participation in the VSA, we administer the Collegiate Learning Assessment (CLA) to a sample of freshmen and seniors. The CLA is a standardized, computer-based test that measures critical thinking, analytic reasoning, and written communication using two different tasks -- a performance task and an analytic writing task. During Fall 2010, 121  first-year students completed the CLA, and 98 seniors completed the test during Spring 2011. The results indicate that students experience above expected learning gains on this test. The principal goal of the CLA is to assist faculty in the improvement of teaching and learning by assessing the level of their students' improvement in targeted skills during their undergraduate education. As part of the graduation process, students were surveyed as to their graduation plans.
