The Access Network
The Access Network provides individualized evaluations and group support to improve skills and enhance life participation and quality of life for adults who have acquired communication and/or swallowing disorders resulting from stroke, brain injury or other medical pathologies.
The Access Network is staffed by clinical instructors and faculty from the Department of Communication Disorders. All are certified by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association in speech-language pathology and are licensed by the Connecticut State Department of Health Services. Faculty and clinical instructors are responsible for planning, managing, and supervising all support services provided by graduate students of the Department of Communication Disorders.
At the Access Network, we are committed to helping you participate to the fullest in all aspects of your life. Our services include individual , small group, and/or large group skill enhancement activities including:
- Social support groups for clients and caregivers
- Education and advocacy regarding communication and swallowing disorders
- Strategies to improve cognitive-communication, expressive and receptive language, and swallowing skills

Support from the Access Network is offered at no cost to eligible participants. We welcome your voluntary donations to help support Access Network programs.
Referrals to the Access Network are accepted from physicians, community and health agencies, families, as well as through self-referral. We limit participation in Network programs to a set number of individuals. When you apply, you must undergo a personal interview with Network staff. If accepted to the program, you will complete a comprehensive communication/swallowing needs assessment during your first month of participation. If space is not immediately available to an eligible individual to join the Access Network, you name will be placed on a waiting list pending an opening.
