Welcome to the Department of Recreation, Tourism, & Sport Management at Southern Connecticut State University! Each year, approximately 200 undergraduate and graduate students work toward careers in the recreation, recreation therapy, child life therapy, tourism, event management, & sport management industries.
Recreation, Tourism, & Sport Management students gain classroom instruction from experienced faculty from each of these industries, and they also develop practical experience in their fields of study as part of the curriculum. Students have gained valuable internship experiences leading to careers in a variety of settings, including community agencies, federal, state, & municipal agencies, state & federal parks, private commercial enterprises, professional, intercollegiate, & interscholastic sport organizations, youth development organizations, not-for-profit organizations, hospitals & rehabilitation settings, as well as travel, hospitality, & entertainment venues.
The Department of Recreation, Tourism, & Sport Management at Southern Connecticut State University seeks to effectively prepare students for managerial and/or clinical careers within the recreation, sport, and tourism industries; to contribute to the societal understanding of the benefits of recreation, sport, and tourism through professional involvement and community service; to continue to provide students with opportunities for experiential learning that reflect current and future industry demands and the complex issues facing diverse populations with disabilities in their pursuit of quality recreation, sport, and leisure experiences.
To facilitate student centered success through learning and leadership development through innovative teaching strategies that integrate relevant research, community service, and a practitioner perspective gained through experiential learning opportunities and connections leading to careers in recreation, tourism, and sport.
