Sport is big business! In 2015, the estimated size of the sport industry in the United States was approximately $500 billion (Plunkett Research). Employment of sport industry professionals is expected to increase by 23% from 2008 to 2018, which is much faster than the average for all occupations (Bureau of Labor Statistics).
The major in Sport Management prepares students for positions within all sectors of the sport industry, including professional sport organizations, intercollegiate athletic departments, interscholastic sport, recreational sport, and sport facility management. Coursework includes instruction in sport governance and administration, sport sales and marketing, facility management, sport ethics, and legal aspects of sport. Students gain sport industry experience through internships arranged with professional sports teams, college athletic departments, public and private sport facilities, sport marketing firms, as well as municipal, national, and non-profit sport organizations.
