What is SI?

SI is a series of weekly review sessions for students taking historically difficult courses.  SI is provided for all students in a course section who want to acquire effective learning strategies and develop an understanding of difficult course material and improve their grades.

Attendance at sessions is voluntary.  For you, the student, it is a chance to get together with classmates to compare notes, discuss important concepts, develop strategies for studying the subject, and test yourselves before your instructor does, so that you will be prepared.  At each session you will be guided through this material by your SI Leader, who is a competent student that has already successfully completed the course.

What is an SI Leader?

SI Leaders are students themselves and are prepared to share with you what they have learned over the years about how to study.  They know the course content and are excited to help guide you through it.  They will be in class with you once a week, if they can, hearing what you hear, and reading what you read.  What they will not do is re-lecture.  Their job is to help you think about the lectures you hear, the books you read, and the problems you solve and then put it all together during the SI review sessions.  SI can help you learn difficult course material more efficiently.

How will SI be Used?

The SI Leader will attend one of your classes once a week, if their schedule allots.  They will hold 2 group review sessions each week at times determined by you after the first week of class.  Each group review session will be 50-60 minutes in length and will work to review concepts discussed the previous week or the current week.  Prior to exams, the SI Leaders will hold review sessions.  Additionally, your SI Leader will hold an office hour each week.  All SI support will be located in the Academic Success Center, Buley 303.

Why Should I Attend SI?

If you attend SI sessions regularly, chances are you will earn a better grade.  The national statistics share that those students who attend SI sessions regularly and participate tend to see a full grade increase.  You also will have developed a better understanding of course content as well as more effective ways of learning.
