Director of Residence Life
Southern Connecticut State University seeks a dynamic and visionary leader to serve as Director of Residence Life. The University is located in New Haven, a city rich with arts and culture, and less than 90 miles from New York City and 140 miles from Boston.
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Residence Life is responsible for the operation, administration, and supervision of a comprehensive residential program housing approximately 2600 students. The Director oversees and manages the delivery of educational programs, services, and activities which encourage student development and promote the achievement of student success; prepares and administers an annual operating budget of approximately four million dollars; oversees the management of the daily operations of the housing program including assignments and billing, purchasing, safety procedures, and short- and long- range facility evaluation and planning; maintains the currency of all policies and procedures; oversees the management of the residence-based judicial system; and recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates professional, support, and paraprofessional staff.
The successful candidate will understand the value that living on campus contributes to the success of college students and will be able to articulate the role that residence halls play on a predominately commuter campus. The ideal candidate will have knowledge of and experience with best practices for residential living in the following areas in support of student learning and success: living and learning environments; academic achievement; diversity and inclusion; social integration; wellness and well-being; life and career preparation; empowerment, advocacy, and accountability; values clarification; and, sustainability.
The preferred candidate will be able to articulate a vision for a comprehensive residential experience; demonstrate success with partnerships across campus; communicate a strong passion for making a difference in the lives of students; value the richness that diversity of thought, experience, and background bring to a residential experience; use student development theory to inform practice; and be resourceful, maximizing human and fiscal resources.
A master's degree and seven years of leadership experience in a university residential life/housing program or in related student service areas are required.
