DECEMBER 29, 2016

Dear SCSU Community,

I hope you are enjoying the holiday break. The provost search committee has continued its work right up through Christmas.

Based on the reference calls we made and our discussion at the search committee meeting on December 19, we have selected nine candidates to be invited for off-site interviews in Hartford on January 12-13. All the candidates have been contacted, are scheduled for an interview, and are eager to meet the Southern community. Each candidate will have a 90-minute interview with the search committee and an additional 30-minute one-on-one interview with President Bertolino. At the conclusion of the interviews, we expect to decide on 3-4 candidates to be invited for campus interviews the week of February 3. Please mark these dates on your calendar so we can show each of our finalists a warm Southern welcome.

As always, if you have any questions regarding the search or would like to provide the committee with feedback, please feel free to contact me directly or submit your comments via the website.

I wish you all the very best for the New Year!

Sincerely,
CDH

December 12, 2016

Dear Southern Community,

Since I last communicated with you, we have completed the recruiting phase of the search for our next provost.  We received 62 applications--a larger and stronger pool than we expected.  At our meeting on December 6, the search committed selected 15 candidates to advance in the search.  All 15 have been contacted and are eager to move forward. Members of the search committee are currently calling listed references for all of the candidates selected.  Our next meeting is on December 19 at which time we will select six-nine candidates from among the 15 to be invited for off-site interviews in Hartford.

Search committee members have reviewed a large number of applications and are attending search committee meetings and making reference calls during a very busy time of the year.  We are all indebted to them for their commitment to the search and the large amount of time they have contributed to ensure its success.  It has been a pleasure to work with such a talented and dedicated group of professionals.

As always, if you have questions or concerns about the search, please feel free to contact me directly. I wish you all a happy end to the semester!

Kind Regards,
CDH

Dear SCSU Community,

I am writing to provide a brief update regarding the search for Southern’s next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. On Friday of last week, the Provost position profile was finalized by the search committee and approved by President Bertolino. I would like to thank all the faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community members who attended the meetings and open forums on 10/6/16 with Dr. Holyer; your input was insightful and truly helped to inform the committee. The resultant document outlines the attributes, experiences, and qualities the committee and the president believe are most critical for our next Provost. It also provides important context to potential candidates, including a brief history of Southern and the CSU system, a description of each of our schools, an explanation of the institution’s strategic planning initiatives, and a detailed description of the Provost’s duties. Please take a moment and read through this important document.

The search advertisement has also been posted on our website, in the Chronicle of Higher Education, and at InsideHigherEd.com. It will soon appear in Women in Higher Education, Hispanic Outlook, and Diverse Jobs, and a hard copy of the advertisement will also appear in the October 28th issue of the Chronicle of Higher Education. Our hope is to attract an extensive pool of diverse, highly-qualified, and experienced candidates. If you wish to nominate a candidate for consideration, please contact Dr. Rob Holyer directly. His contact information is:

If you wish to provide feedback to the committee at any point throughout the process, please feel free to contact me or any member of the committee. If you would like to submit anonymous feedback, you may do so through the search website. All submissions will be reviewed and considered.

As we progress through the search process, I will continue to provide regular updates to the SCSU community. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me directly.

Sincerely,

Oct 7, 2016

Dear Southern Community,

I am writing to provide a brief update regarding the search for Southern’s next Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. As you know, last week President Bertolino announced the relaunch of this important search. Dr. Rob Holyer of AGB Search has been retained as a consultant for this process, and will work closely with Dr. Bertolino and the search committee to ensure our process is comprehensive, well-publicized, and results in an excellent pool of highly-qualified candidates.

Yesterday, Dr. Holyer and several members of the search committee met with various constituencies on campus to gather input. On behalf of the committee, I want to thank those who attended; your insights and opinions provided valuable information regarding the attributes and experiences we should seek in our next Provost. These discussions will not only inform the position profile and advertisement we will use to recruit potential candidates, but will also help us during the interview process.

A detailed timeline for the entire search is now available on the Provost Search website. I encourage you to periodically check this website for updates and for the most current information about the search. I will also email you directly when important events occur. One important note: Administrative searches at this level require complete confidentiality of members of the search committee; all communication about the search must come through the committee chair. Please do not ask committee members for updates - we will keep you fully informed through emails and the Provost Search website. If you have questions or concerns, please feel free to communicate them to me directly.

Finally, if you did not have the opportunity to attend the meetings yesterday but would like to submit your feedback, I encourage you to contact myself or any other member of the committee. If you wish to submit comments anonymously, it can be done here. All comments will be reviewed and considered by the full committee.

Thank you for your time. I look forward to working with our talented search committee and the entire SCSU community throughout this important process.

Sincerely,
Craig Hlavac
