Operating Systems: Mac OS X

Manufacturer Site: http://www.apple.com/accessibility/osx/#learning

OS X Speech Recognition

Mac OS X comes standard with many assistive technologies that help people with disabilities. VoiceOver and Speakable Items are two key features that come standard with Mac OS X.

VoiceOver is a feature designed mainly for users who are visually impaired, but assists users with other disabilities as well. The VoiceOver feature is a text-to-speech tool that is able to tell a user exactly what is happening on their Mac, and allows the user to interact with it using various gestures, a keyboard, or a braille display. The VoiceOver feature walks a user through actions like selecting a menu option or activating a button using the keyboard. With this VoiceOver feature, users are able to have complete control over their Mac, with no need to see the screen.

Speakable Items is a Mac feature that allows a user to control their computer using their voice instead of the keyboard. This feature can allow a user to do things like close or minimize windows, navigate menus, open and switch between apps, turn text into sticky notes, or start a screen saver. With Speakable Items a user can also have their Mac acknowledge that it was heard a specific command.

Features

VoiceOver

The Alex Voice

Alex is the voice of Mac, and he uses advanced technologies to deliver natural-sounding speech.

Gestures

A user can touch the trackpad on the Mac OS X to hear a description of the items under your finger, drag to hear items continuously, and flick to move to the next item.

The Rotor

Turning the rotor – by rotating two fingers on the trackpad as if the user was turning an actual dial – lets the user access an array of commands without having to learn new gestures.

Braille

VoiceOver is the first screen reader to provide plug-and-play support for refreshable braille displays.

International Voices

VoiceOver in OS X includes built-in voices that speak over 30 languages.
