The mission of the Master of Athletic Training (MAT) is to prepare entry-level athletic trainers equipped with the knowledge, skills, and behaviors committed to enhancing patient outcomes, professional development, and advocating for the athletic training profession.
For the individual interested in combining healthcare and athletics, sports, physical activity, or occupational health, a career in athletic training is for you. The Master of Athletic Training at Southern Connecticut State University is a 62-credit, full-time, two-year, residential, entry-level, professional graduate-level program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) 2001 K Street NW, 3rd Floor North, Washington, DC 20006, 844-GO-CAATE (844-462-2283).
Consistent with Southern Connecticut's commitment to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good, the Master of Athletic Training provides a high-quality, lower-cost alternative to most other athletic training programs nationally and within Connecticut.
We offer reduced tuition for all students residing in New England, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania. For Connecticut residents, we have the lowest overall costs of any Connecticut-based program.
We welcome students from all backgrounds to our program and from any undergraduate major or degree, provided students have met all admission requirements. Students completing their bachelor's degree are encouraged to apply during their final undergraduate study semester and may be granted conditional or early admittance until degree conferral.
Our educational program includes face-to-face classroom instruction, simulations, and extensive supervised, hands-on, full-time immersive clinical experiences in a broad array of healthcare services, including:
After two years of classroom and clinical education, Master of Athletic Training graduates are eligible to sit for the Board of Certification (BOC) national examination to become an athletic trainer. As the longest accredited athletic training program in Connecticut, we are proud of the many accomplishments of our students, faculty, and preceptors.
The Master of Athletic Training curriculum addresses various topics through an effective blend of theoretical knowledge and practical application; students will develop the knowledge and behaviors needed to excel as skilled athletic trainers in athletic training and sports medicine.
Goal #1: As a healthcare team member, students will practice athletic training autonomously, in conjunction with a collaborating or supervising physician.
Goal #2: Students will develop, extend, and refine athletic training knowledge, skills, and clinical decision-making abilities.
Goal #3: Students will model and promote professional behaviors fundamental to healthcare professionals within and across diverse contexts.
Goal #4: The program will provide a learning environment that offers students an exemplary graduate education committed to academic excellence, access, social justice, and service for the public good.
In addition to the direct costs that appear on a student’s University bill (e.g., tuition, university fees, and Master of Athletic Training Clinical Course fees), students are responsible for any indirect costs associated with attending the University, including the Master of Athletic Training and do NOT appear on a student’s bill. These indirect costs include:
Please note these are estimated costs from the Office of Financial Aid, based upon full-time enrollment for one year, and that housing and meals are direct costs for those students who choose to live on campus (billed by the University) and are indirect costs if students choose to commute from their residence.
We welcome students from all backgrounds, provided students submit a completed application by June 15th and meet the following criteria:
Application to the Master of Athletic Training requires two simultaneous online applications:
We urge applicants to submit their completed application (and supporting documents) well in advance of the deadline. Submitting a completed application well before the deadline will give applicants priority consideration for admission. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered for admission.
The Master of Athletic Training is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) for the maximum of ten (10) years allowed for continuing accredited programs. We received our initial accreditation in October 1995 and will complete our next CAATE comprehensive review in 2026-27.
