The Romance languages are modern languages that evolved from Vulgar Latin between the third and eighth centuries. Southern’s unique Master of Arts in Romance Languages offers advanced training in French, Italian, and Spanish.
Throughout the program, students engage in scholarly research and writing, culminating in a capstone experience. While the target languages are integrated into classroom discussions, the program also emphasizes various methods of communication and analysis to ensure students achieve a fluent and idiomatic mastery of each language.
Graduates are prepared to teach these languages at the elementary, middle, high school, or college levels, pursue further graduate work up to the doctoral degree, or enter related fields such as foreign service, government, private industry, translation and interpreting, and librarianship.
French is a vibrant international language that represents the second most widely spoken native language and foreign language in Europe.
