School Library Media Specialist programs offer preparation for teachers seeking cross endorsement as school library media specialists, as well as preparation for those seeking initial teaching licenses in Connecticut. Both programs are offered as stand-alone specializations, as well as a concentration within our Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) program.
This program offers the opportunity to gain certification as a K-12 teacher in Connecticut. This program welcomes mid-career professionals seeking a career change and recent graduates interested in teaching and school libraries.
As the only program of its kind in Connecticut, with nationally recognized faculty and a statewide network of professional support, we welcome inquiries and interest from potential students with all types of undergraduate degrees and professional backgrounds.
Initial Certification with Dual Enrollment in MLIS requires additional 9 credits, which include a Capstone Experience.
Applicants must complete the Praxis Core Academic Skills for Educators exam to be considered for admission to the program.
This program prepares currently certified Connecticut teachers for cross-endorsement as school library media specialists. This certificate is designed for certified teachers seeking additional endorsement as school library media specialists — an area in Connecticut that is currently experiencing a designated shortage in both high needs, urban and suburban districts. As well as managing libraries, technology, and media integration in their schools, school library media specialists empower students to be critical thinkers, enthusiastic readers, and skillful researchers.
Cross Endorsement with Dual Enrollment in MLIS requires an additional 6 credits, which include a Capstone Experience.
Library science careers offer strong growth potential. The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) projects the need for librarians to grow nine percent through 2026. According to Indeed.com, the average salary for library scientists nationally is $60,000. Those with a master's degree or higher typically earn more than $84,000 per year.
The MLIS program is accredited by the American Library Association (ALA).
