Physical Education/Teacher Certification Program
SCSU has been recognized as a leader in teacher preparation since it began as a Teacher’s College in 1893.
The Physical Education/Teacher Certification program is a unique and dynamic curriculum for prospective teachers. Students will be introduced to age-appropriate educational movement activities in the areas of fitness, team and individual games and sports, gymnastics, dance and adventure education. In each of these curriculum areas students will develop teaching strategies that will allow them to meet the needs of diverse learners from a psychomotor, cognitive and affective domain perspective.
The program includes multiple opportunities to gain real-life field experiences throughout the student’s matriculation prior to student teaching and during the culminating student teaching experience. Course instruction is provided by energetic and caring faculty that has a sincere interest in each student’s development.
Successful completion of the 120-credit degree program in the Physical Education/Teacher Certification program satisfies the academic requirements for a K-12 Physical Education Teaching Certificate in Connecticut as well as eligibility for teacher certification in most other states (the PRAXIS II exam is also required for certification).
The SCSU physical education teacher preparation program is nationally recognized by SHAPE America and NCATE/CAEP.
