Each year the participating faculty of the WCCMS will prepare and submit to the Werth Family Foundation an annual report describing the Center activities. This report will be generated each year and will be made available in electronic and hard copy form. It will provide definitive information and detailed summaries of all yearly projects, events, activities, forums, and accomplishments conducted/achieved by the Center and its personnel. The WCCMS Annual Report will be completed and submitted to the Werth Family Foundation during February of each year.

Funding obtained via this grant will be used to purchase equipment in support of the newly developed course on Marine Field and Laboratory Techniques (MAR 460). The course will become a capstone course in the Marine Studies Minor Program at SCSU. This project is supported by SCSU Faculty Development funds.
Assessment of Learning for Educational Improvement Grant Program: Mentored Research Studies/Center for Coastal and Marine Studies

The focus of this grant proposal is to develop assessment protocols that permit and promote extent of the education experience through faculty mentored research projects of our undergraduate students. The student research experience is a key component of the Connecticut State University Center for Coastal and Marine Studies recently established by the state and co-directed by Drs. Vincent Breslin and Jim Tait of the Science Education and Environmental Studies Department and Dr. Dwight Smith of the Biology Department. This project is supported by SCSU Faculty Development funds.

Sean Patrick Grace, an assistant professor of biology and an expert on aquatic life, is the recipient of Southern’s second annual Junior Faculty Research Fellow award. Grace has conducted considerable research on corals in Long Island Sound.

Seven years after a die-off dealt a catastrophic blow to the American lobster in western Long Island Sound, Coleen Giannini is completing a study that will help biologists gauge the health of the species and ultimately may affect government regulations for maintaining the region’s lobster population.

Southern's Center for Coastal and Marine Studies has received a major boost from the Werth Family Foundation with a recent grant of $170,000, most of which will be targeted toward student environmental research.
