Academy for the Advancement of Behavior Science (AABS)

The Academy is committed to supporting the science and practice of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in a variety of areas. We are dedicated to helping professionals, families, and communities in making valued progress.

Applied Behavior Analysis is a science and practice based on many years of research and application, resulting in well-defined principles and procedures. In practice, ABA professionals work with individuals and groups to identify their priorities and use then use science and methods of ABA to help individuals meet those goals. ABA professionals can be found in many fields, but are probably most commonly found working in educational settings helping with assessment and developing interventions.

The science of ABA has certifications available, based in part on the education level of the person holding the certificate.

  • The Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) is a certificate in ABA that is available or professionals with a high school degree and training in ABA.  RBTs work while under the supervision of a board certified behavior analyst, often supporting individuals in educational, clinic, or home-based settings.

  • The Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) is a certificate in ABA that is available or professionals with an undergraduate degree and training in ABA.  BCaBAs work closely with BCBAs to support their students and clients and have additional training beyond the RBT in program development and monitoring.

  • The Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) is a certificate in ABA that is available or professionals with a master’s degree and training in ABA.  BCBAs have additional training beyond the BCaBA in assessments, intervention, and program development and monitoring.

  • The Board Certified Behavior Analyst - Doctoral (BCBA-D) is a certificate in ABA that is available or professionals with a doctoral degree and training in ABA.  BCBA-Ds have additional training beyond the BCBA.
