In Case of Extreme Weather Conditions
Here are the procedures to follow if storm conditions or other emergencies make it advisable to delay openings, cancel classes, or close all operations.
In the event of a severe snowstorm or other emergency, the first and most accurate information is posted on Southern's WeatherChek message line:
(203) 392-SNOW (7669)
The administration will also notify area radio stations, including WELI New Haven (960 AM), WICC Bridgeport (600 AM), WDRC Hartford (102.9 FM), WATR Waterbury (1320 AM), WNLC New London (1510 AM), and WSTC Stamford (1400 AM). The radio cancellation announcement for morning classes will normally be made by 6 a.m. The cancellation announcement for early afternoon classes will normally be made by 10 a.m.
Evening classes (those which begin at 4 p.m. or later) are not automatically cancelled when day classes are cancelled. Radio announcements regarding evening class cancellations will normally be made by 2 p.m.
Cancellation decisions for special events, theater presentations, or athletic events will be made four hours prior to the scheduled start time of the event.
Please note that, while the university does use radio and television stations to issue weather closing announcements, there is sometimes a delay before these reports are aired. Use the WeatherChek line -- (203) 392-SNOW (7669) -- as your first source for up-to-date information.
