New Student Convocation and Rite of Passage and Foudner's Gate Tradition
Southern Connecticut State University’s New Student Convocation and Rite of Passage Ceremony marks a pivotal moment in the academic and personal journeys of our newest Owls. This inspiring event serves as both a celebration and a formal induction into the Southern community, symbolizing the beginning of an exciting chapter of growth, discovery, and achievement. Surrounded by faculty, staff, and peers, new students are welcomed with traditions and messages that highlight Southern’s core values of academic excellence, inclusivity, and community engagement. The ceremony encourages students to embrace the opportunities and challenges ahead as they embark on their transformative college experience.
The Founder’s Gate Ceremony is a beloved Southern tradition marking the official start of students’ collegiate journey. Originally part of Southern’s Howe Street campus, the historic gate now stands between Lyman Center and Engleman Hall as a link to the university’s rich history.
Following New Student Convocation, students pass through the gate, symbolizing their induction into the Southern community, as faculty, staff, and student leaders cheer them on. The celebration continues with a barbecue behind Engleman Hall, fostering connections and welcoming students to their new home at Southern.
