Drone Academy

The Drone Academy is a five-module, non-credit program geared towards enthusiastic hobbyists and working professionals who are interested in gaining the knowledge and skills needed for drone operation, aerial photography and videography, FAA certification exam preparation, and computational photography and 3D mapping. 

Each module can be completed as a stand-alone option, and participants can customize the program depending on their specific areas of interest. Participants who complete all five modules will gain a strong understanding of safe drone aviation, will be prepared to successfully pass the FAA exam, will learn the best practices for making quality aerial stills and videos using Photoshop and Final Cut Pro, and learn how to use Px4d software for landscape mapping and 3D modeling.

Southern's 12-credit, graduate-level certificate in Applied Statistics is designed for individuals who wish to augment or begin studies in applied statistics. Students are trained in the collection, organization, analysis, interpretation, and presentation of numerical data. By enrolling in the certificate program, students build competency in the field of applied statistics that is beneficial to a wide range of careers because it improves individuals' data analytic skills. 

Data Science, Graduate Certificate 
Southern's 12-credit, graduate-level certificate in Data Science is designed for business and industry professionals who work with data or who are interested in data-driven decision-making. The certificate introduces students to Basic Python programming concepts, Python libraries, machine learning algorithms and models, and basic statistical and mathematical principles. Students learn analytical skills taught with current industry-standard tools, as well as fundamental programming skills to retrieve, manipulate, and visualize data. They also learn to apply machine learning, data mining, and inferential statistical techniques to identify patterns in data and make predictions.

The Institute for Real World Education and Curriculum Advancement (IRWECA) is a partnership between the Office of Research and Innovation at SCSU and the Connecticut State Department of Education. 

The goals are:

  2. support educators’ development and implementation of new teaching and learning aligned with the needs of those companies
