Wise OWLLS initiative is dedicated to providing a lively and intellectually challenging array of virtual workshops and seminars facilitated throughout the year by faculty, staff, and fellow alumni.

Wise OWLLS come from all walks of life and career paths, and although open to all members of our community, is geared towards retired and semi-retired alumni.

New workshops are always being considered, and many are inspired and welcomed by alumni. There are many avenues for participation, which include joining the committee, teaching a workshop, or attending one of our lecture series.

Fierce Aging: Unlocking the Secrets to Vibrant, Resilient Living

Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking virtual talk on Fierce Aging, where two leading experts will share insights on aging with resilience, vitality, and purpose. This session will explore the intersection of aging, health, and empowerment, offering a deeper understanding of how individuals can navigate the challenges of aging while maintaining strength and well-being.

Dr. Catherine (Kathy) Jankowski
Dr. Jankowski is a renowned expert in the fields of gerontology and nursing, currently a faculty member at the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus. With extensive experience in research and practice, Dr. Jankowski’s work focuses on improving the health outcomes of older adults, particularly those living with chronic conditions. In this talk, she will explore strategies for enhancing resilience in the aging process, from promoting physical health to fostering mental and emotional well-being. Her research sheds light on the role of healthcare systems in supporting aging individuals to live healthier, more fulfilling lives.

Dr. Tarah Loy-Ashe
Dr. Loy-Ashe is an associate professor at Southern Connecticut State University, where she specializes in aging, public health, and human development. With a passion for advocating for aging populations, Dr. Loy-Ashe's work focuses on understanding the societal and psychological aspects of aging. Her talk will address the concept of “fierce aging” by discussing how individuals can embrace aging as a powerful and transformative phase of life. She will also discuss practical strategies for building resilience and cultivating mental well-being in later years, helping attendees reframe their perspective on aging as a time of strength, growth, and opportunity.
