Meet the Staff
Sal Rizza has served as Director of New Student and Sophomore Programs since September of 2014. Sal graduated from Southern in 1998 with a bachelor's degree in English and also holds a master's degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies. Following graduation, Sal began his career in the field of higher education by working with the Department of Residence Life as a graduate intern and hall director. From 2004-2014, he served as the Associate Director of Student Life. As the Director of New Student and Sophomore Programs, he is excited to support the success of first-year students, transfer students and sophomores as well as working with the Veteran's Affairs Office. Sal is also the Faculty Adviser to the Omega Zeta Pi Sorority.
Anay’s Cruz-Alonso started her role with the Office of New Student and Sophomore Programs in May of 2017. She graduated from Southern Connecticut State University in December of 2016 with a B.S. in Early Childhood Education as well as a B.A. in Liberal Studies. Anay’s is currently earning her master’s degree in Counselor Education with a Specialization in Student Development in Higher Education from Central Connecticut State University. She is excited to utilize her various leadership experiences to help students succeeded during their undergraduate career.
Sterling has served as a Graduate Intern in the office of New Student and Sophomore Programs since May 2017. He holds a B.A. in Sociology from Central Connecticut State University and is pursuing a M.S. degree in Sociology here at Southern. Sterling has worked as a graduate assistant for both the Department of Sociology and the Academic Success Center. He is also an active member of the Graduate Student Affairs Committee and served as the 2016-2017 president.
