The Owl Flight to Excellence Peer Mentor Program is a key component of the four-year Owl Flight to Excellence Initiative at Southern Connecticut State University. Launched in Fall 2024, the program is designed to support first-generation and historically underserved students, guiding them through a transformative college experience from their first year all the way to graduation.

The program unfolds in four progressive stages:

Year 1: This foundational year focuses on building strong, meaningful relationships between mentees and peer mentors, providing personalized guidance, and fostering a sense of belonging.

Year 2: Scholars deepen their academic engagement by connecting with their chosen majors and participating in leadership development opportunities, laying the groundwork for their professional paths.

Year 3: Emphasizing experiential learning, this phase enables students to apply their skills through internships, study abroad experiences, and other hands-on opportunities. Mentees also step into leadership roles by becoming mentors for new participants, creating a cycle of empowerment and community.

Year 4: The program culminates in the senior year, which focuses on preparing scholars for graduation and their next big step. Whether launching a career, pursuing further education, or embracing other post-college opportunities, students are empowered to "fly" confidently and purposefully.

How to Apply

The mentor selection process occurs every spring, and mentees are chosen during the New Student Orientation sessions each summer. Interested students are encouraged to contact Bernard Macklin, Assistant Director of University Access Programs, at macklinb2@southernct.edu for more information about how to get involved.

Whether as a mentor or mentee, participating in this program allows students to grow, lead, and succeed while creating lasting connections and meaningful experiences that will shape their future.
